Movie: Magic Kisa
My Rating: 4 stars
This was a wonderfully suspenseful thriller by French director, Mathieu Saliva. We actually had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Saliva because he came to the screening and answered a few questions about the film afterward. There are many themes in this film, including the bond between twins, love, rejection, mysticism, and identity. It is the story of twin brothers who are con-men. One got caught and was locked up in jail for a while. The other went free and fell into a comfortable family life. When the audience first encounters them, they are meeting up again for the first time in years. Naturally, tensions are running a little high. This is quite an exciting film, full of tension and uncertainty, and plenty of graphic violence. Seriously, would it be a movie about low-life scam artists if someone didn't get their fingers hacked off with a hand saw? And it only gets more disturbing from there. The plot is wonderfully written and keeps you guessing 'til the end. Mathieu Saliva is definitely a director to keep your eye on.
